Children's Nursing involves providing nursing care to a child and their family

They must be well-versed in all things related to childhood development, including how it changes throughout different stages like infancy or teenage years. They will often care for children with complex medical and social needs. 

Roles and Responsibilities  

• Frequently assess and make informed observations about a child’s  ongoing health and social needs
• Administer medication and treatments as prescribed and observe for the desired response to those treatments
• Document the child’s condition and liaise with a multidisciplinary team to ensure a holistic approach to the child’s care (i.e. Physiotherapists, Public Health Nurse etc) 
• Provide support to a child who is palliative and assist the family with caring for a terminally ill child
• Develop care plans that are both person centred and family centered as required

 Registered Children’s Nurses need excellent communication skills and critical thinking abilities as many of the children they care will  not be able to verablise their needs. Children’s nurses help children and parents to understand their illness and teach the child and families the knowledge and skills to manage their illness, so that they can live as normal a life as possible.
